Students from Nadi District School were at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa at Denarau Island to learn more about recycling.

The resort is part of the Accor Hotels Group – a French hotel group which is part of the CAC 40 index (French stock market). The Group operates in 92 countries – 3600 hotels on five (5) continents.

The group also celebrated its international sustainability programme – PLANET 21.

Sofitel Resort and Spa marked the event by conducting an art and craft competition on recycling. It was held in 16 classrooms in the school to raise awareness of what can be recycled.

School headteacher Meli Cabebula commended the PLANET 21 initiative.

“We are very fortunate to have this initiative from the Sofitel resort staff on how to look after rubbish,” Mr Cabebula said.

“They went around teaching, not only students, but also teachers on how to reuse and recycle rubbish,” he said.

“They also brought two bins each for the 16 classrooms and three for the office so we can practice what we are taught.

“This is very useful because we are trying to teach our students how to dispose litter in the proper manner. We will continue to follow this good habit because it is a discipline. When they grow up it will be a part of their life.

“If we want our Fiji to be clean and be an environment-friendly community, then the children are the ones who need to be taught,” he said.

The day included competitions and activities and ended with a donation of sporting equipment to the school by the resort.
