Aplea has been made to a Government delegation visiting parts of the Lau Group to consider an urgent upgrade of roads on Vanuabalavu.

The plea came from Lomaloma District Representative Laveti Saurara during a talanoa session with Commissioner Eastern Luke Moroivalu.

Mr Saurara said most roads on the island were inaccessible during bad weather.

“We seek the assistance of the Government because the road is really in bad condition,” he said.

“We seek assistance to upgrade the roads on Vanua Balavu for the sake of the mobilisation of the villagers on the island.”

Mr Saurara said during rainy weather the road from Lomaloma to Dakuilomaloma was not accessible, likewise the road from Delana Government Station to Boitaci Village and Airport Road to Daliconi Village.

“We want to raise our concern about the number of people working at the Fiji Roads Authority depot on the island. We think the number is not sufficient to mend the roads on the island,” Mr Saurara said.

Meanwhile, Mr Moroivalu said at the beginning of this year his office held a meeting with the Fiji Roads Authority and they were assured $600,000 had been put aside to upgrade the roads around Vanuabalavu.

“I strongly believe that if this money comes in then it should be sufficient enough to fix the road and put in culverts at various places to improve the condition of road, particularly during the rainy season,” he said.

Mr Moroivalu said there was a road depot in Vanuabalavu manned by a road supervisor, two labourers with a truck at their disposal.

“This alone will not be able to upgrade the road, but we are waiting for FRA to put in their maintenance plan on the island for which they will spend the funds allocated,” he said.
