Call For Skilled Coaches

Olympic Solidarity representative Nils Holmegaard believes in the importance of having highly skilled coaches to produce professional athletes.
Speaking at the Oceania National Olympic Committee (ONOC) and Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) media workshop, Holmegaard said one of Olympic Solidarity’s main missions was sending athletes to the Olympic Games.
“In order to have a team at the Olympic Games the preparation starts much earlier in preparing the delegation and in particular the development of athletes,” he said.
“We help in giving support to the athletes through Olympic Solidarity.
“We believe it’s important to start from the bottom in targeting young people and then continue to support them through to the continental and regional games.
“But in order to have professional athletes, you need to also have highly skilled coaches, so another of Olympic Solidarity’s missions is to ensure that there are skilled coaches.”
Holmegaard said the Oceania region will be the first continent that will host a forum for those going to the Olympic Games in Brazil.
“We are the development arm of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), managing the funds that belong to the IOC,” he said.
“We provide financial support for participation of the NOCs at the Olympic Games, before the games.
“So this is why, this week, Oceania will be the first continent to host a forum for the operational people going to the Olympic Games.”
The media workshop will continue throughout the week until Saturday. IOC president Thomas Bach arrives in Suva on Thursday.
