The Apisai Naweilulu-captained Ratu Navula College Under-18 rugby team departed yesterday for a three-match tour of New Zealand.

The Nadi school plays Wesley College today, Pukekohe High School on Wednesday and Kelston Boys High School later in the week.

School principal Setareki Merekula is accompanying the team of 26 players, four teachers and three parents.

He said the team was confident of a positive outcome from playing top rugby schools in Auckland.

“We’re looking forward to this lifetime experience as a group,” Merekula said.

“This is a build-up for the boys as they prepare for the 2015 Deans Trophy next month.”

He said the tour was sealed last year when Wesley College toured Fiji.

Merekula said there were fundraising drives by the parent, students and friends to fund the tour.

“We just need to get into Auckland Airport,” Merekula said.

“The travel, meals and accommodation for the seven days will be funded by Wesley College.

“This is a learning experience and we are thankful to the parents for preparing their sons for this trip.”

The team returns on May 5 and will start preparing for the Deans competition, including the defence of the Voravora Cup which is contes ted by West II Zone.

Ratu Navula became the first Western school to win the holy grail of school’s rugby in 2013.

Lelean Memorial School are the current holders of the Deans Trophy.
