5 In Hospital After Yaqara Crash

A United States citizen who is in Fiji as a humanitarian worker is in critical condition at the Lautoka Hospital after being involved in a road accident on Sunday evening.

He was driving a rental vehicle with members of his humanitarian group from the Sai Organisation when the accident happened at Yaqara near Rakiraki. The man, believed to be about 30 years old, is part of a 75-member group conducting free medical services to Fijians in rural areas.

He was driving three colleagues, who are from New Zealand, to Rakiraki Town when their vehicle was hit by a Government vehicle – a twin cab belonging to the Ministry of Forests and Fisheries.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said: “There was a serious accident near Yaqara whereby a government vehicle and a rental van was involved.

“It is alleged the driver of the government vehicle hit a cow and then veered off the opposite lane and hit the other vehicle.”

Two passengers of the government vehicle are admitted at the Tavua Hospital.

The rest of the passengers were treated and sent home.

Ms Naisoro, meanwhile, urges the public to be cautious when travelling on the road, especially on locations known to have stray animals and livestock.
