Weightlifting Fiji section manager Josefa Vueti says the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa in September is a great opportunity to gain exposexperience for young athletes.

He made the comment during the announcement of Team Fiji officials yesterday.

“We’re going there and our goal is to win gold,”Vueti said.

“With 69 countries taking part, it’s a big event.

“Manueli Tulo won six gold medals in the Mini Games and Pacific Games and was the overall Oceania champion from 2009 until last year. So it’s a good competition especially for the young athletes.”

Fiji Swimming section manager Sharon Smith echoed similar sentiments.

“Definitely it helps with more competitions for young swimmers,” Smith said.

“The swimmers’ ages range from about 14 to 17 for the girls and 15 to 18 for the boys.

Olympic archer Robert Elder said they had high hopes for their athlete.

“For archery, we’re sending one athlete. We’re only allowed to send two athletes, one male and one female,” he said.

Former national athletics rep Makelesi Batimala and Rafaele Tunaulu have been named the officials for athletics.

Vodafone Fiji 7s coach Ben Ryan will coach the team while Telecom Fijiana coach Iliesa Tanivula will mentor the girls. Ropate Kauvesi will serve as manager. Ravi Singh will officiate for squash and Krishneel Kumar for tennis.

Former national basketball and netball representative Caroline Williams will be Team Fiji chef de mission.

The 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games will be held in Samoa on September 5-11.
