Work Together, Miller Tells Islanders

Dennis Miller stressed the importance of Pacific islanders working together at the Rio Olympic Games.

The Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) executive director addressed the delegates/chef de missions at the Grand Pacific Hotel during the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regional workshop yesterday.

It will be the first workshop out of eight which will be held around the world in preparation for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

“It is very important we prepare our teams well for the games,” Miller said.

“Many of you are experienced chef de missions and there are also some new to the role. So it is important that we work together. We have been working together as a region since 1996 and we look forward to seeing how we can do that again for Rio.”

With athletes being the main focus, Miller said it was imperative they got paid much attention.

“From a continental Olympic Solidarity programmes side, we don’t really have anything specific for Rio preparations. It’s just more through themed sports but I encourage National Olympic Committees (NOC) to have a look at your national activity programmes through next year.

“And do so by putting a bit more focus on the athletes that have a chance of qualifying.

“Especially with Rugby 7s, not all of us play but for those who do, it will be a tough qualification process for Pacific island nations.”

The workshop, which ends today will be focused on different areas of the 2016 Rio Olympics like-Policies/procedures of the (IOC); – qualification system; -Accreditation;-Medical Services; media operation;-ticketing;-Ethics.
