Sports can play an important role in building nations and people, says one of the world’s leading sports administrators in Suva yesterday..

The Association of National Olympic Committees secretary general Gunilla Lindberg made the comment during the chef de mission/ administration workshop at the Grand Pacific Hotel yesterday.

Ms Lindberg, from Sweden, is also an International Olympic Committee member (IOC).

“The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is working on how to get the younger generation involved and how to support the new sports that will attract the young people,”she said.

“Sports is important and we are looking at different ways to involve everybody.”

With the IOC president Thomas Bach arriving tonight, Lindberg said the visit would be huge for Fiji and Oceania.

“President Bach’s visit is timely for the Oceania region as build up for Rio,”Lindberg said.

‘Just like other parts of the world, the Oceania region is a fantastic region.”

Lindberg applauded the involvement of women in sports in the Oceania region.

All the Women in Sports Commissions are doing a great job, especially in the Oceania, she said.

With rugby sevens now included in the 2016 Rio Olympics, Lindberg strongly believes it is a huge opportunity for our island nations to win medals.

“Sport’s developing all the time and you have a big opportunity in Fiji with the rugby sevens team.”
