Opposition whip Ratu Isoa Delamisi Tikoca appeared before the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.

The Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption charged the Member of Parliament for failing to declare liabilities contrary to Section 24 (2) (a) (viii) of Political Parties (Registration, conduct, funding and disclosures) Decree No.4 of 2013.

FICAC lawyer Rashmi Aslam served the first phase of disclosures to Ratu Isoa’s lawyer, Faizal Koya.

Mr Koya requested that the plea be deferred until full disclosures were served and submitted bail applications before Magistrate Makereta Mua.

No objections were made by Mr Aslam.

Magistrate Mua granted bail on conditions that Ratu Isoa submit his travelling documents to court and present two sureties.

His sureties are two Members of Parliament – Viliame Gavoka and Josefa Dulakiverata.

The sureties had been asked to sign a bail bond of $1000 each.

The court appearance generated a lot of public interest with parliamentarians in attendance including Opposition leader Ro Teimumu Kepa, Biman Prasad, Prem Singh and other opposition members.

In an e-mail, Ro Teimumu said she was relieved with the outcome of Ratu Isoa’s court appearance yesterday.

Ro Teimumu said Ratu Isoa co-operated fully with FICAC investigators in the West over a 4 day period before being brought to Suva for further questioning and his appearance in court.

Ro Teimumu said that given that the matter was before the courts, there would be no further statements from the Opposition on this matter as Ratu Isoa’s counsel was yet to be furnished with full disclosures.

The case has been adjourned to May 28 for FICAC to serve the second phase of disclosures.
