Ryan’s Defence Plan

Vodafone Fijian 7s coach Ben Ryan said defence was vital if they were to end the World Rugby Sevens on a high. “Defence will be fundamental in our campaign for the two remaining tournaments in Glasgow and London,” Ryan said.

“When we defend well we become more economically saving our energy to attack.

“We want to win the ball and make other teams work hard. We got the most points scored this year and we would want to maintain this.

“Our attack is working well because we’re scoring an average of 30 points a game, Our defence needs just to be stronger so that we make sure that we are able to stop teams scoring more points than they are currently doing.

“We’ve worked so hard to get ourselves in these positions and we can’t afford to slack down. “As for now I am not bothered about the other teams, I’m just concentrating on us and making sure that we finish very strong.

“We came first in Hong Kong and third in Tokyo in the last leg.

“We can afford to lose one game or two games if we are to win the series title.”

Fiji is in Pool C with Scotland, Wales and Portugal. The team departs for Glasgow on Saturday.

Kaka returns for New Zealand

London: Gillies Kaka returns to the All Blacks sevens squad for the final two rounds of the World Rugby Sevens Series as Sir Gordon Tietjens names his squad of 12 for Glasgow and London.

With qualification for the Olympics high on New Zealand’s agenda, they face a tough pool in Glasgow with Kenya, Samoa and South Africa their opponents as they also aim to win a 13th World Series title.

“It’s important we do well. If we win that pool and go on to win the tournament we can go on to win the World Series,” Tietjens said.

“It’s going to be tough. Qualifying for the Olympics is always our first priority so it’s paramount we do well and accumulate more points.”

NZ Squad: Scott Curry, Ambrose Curtis, Dylan Collier, Sam Dickson, Gillies Kaka, DJ Forbes (c), Reiko Ioane, Tim Mikkelson, Sherwin Stowers, Beudein Waaka, Joe Webber, Sam Vaka.
