The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, is on an official three-day tour of the Northern Division.

The minister will officially open the new Nadogo Women’s Resource Centre in Wainikoro, Macuata, today.

The centre is the first for Macuata Province and the ministry gave $33,818 for the project.

It will open up income-generating opportunities for more than 10 women’s groups in the province.

It is understood the core product will be handicraft. Apart from that, women will be provided with entrepreneurship skills training.

The women have developed their business plan for projects, apart from the handicraft production.

They will use the centre to take catering orders for social events and the centre can be converted into a meeting place.

The ministry has to date constructed more than 67 women’s resource centres around Fiji.

Ms Akbar will visit the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI) Mothers Group at Labasa Sangam College in Namara, Labasa, tomorrow (Saturday).

She is expected to meet more than 100 women from the group and discuss the ways the women can be empowered through Ministry’s programmes.

Following her visit to the TISI Sangam Mother’s Group, she will also visit the proposed site for the Regional Barefoot College in Seaqaqa.

On Sunday, Ms Akbar will hold discussions with the Macuata Muslim Women’s League on possible assistance with women’s projects.

This event is scheduled for 10am at Labasa Muslim Primary School on Salusalu Street, Labasa.
