Discussions are being held to amend the Fijian Parliament Standing Orders and Parliamentary Procedures.

This is done through the assistance of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which has been working to provide support to the Parliament of Fiji through a project funded by the European Union and the governments of New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

UNDP parliamentary expert Dyfan Jones said the meeting with the three party caucuses – FijiFirst, SODELPA and NFP had been positive.

“The discussion is mainly focused on how Parliament procedures can be changed to make Parliament work more effectively,” Mr Jones said.

“This is a good time to review how our Parliament is working and whether the procedures are working well, so UNDP has been working with the three party caucuses to discuss how the procedures are working,” he said.

Meanwhile, Government whip Semi Koroilavesau said the result of discussions between the separate caucuses would then go to the Parliament Business Committee.

“There are some procedures and processes within Parliament which have not been working well, so the Speaker has given us approval to amend the Standing Order of Parliament,” he said.

“Both sides of the house will do their review and the business committee will come and meet and discuss the changes they have suggested.

“We will make an agreement on it and hopefully these changes will be implemented before the next sitting.”
