‘Use Life Jackets’

Everyone is responsible for one’s safety and must ensure they do the right thing, says the deputy secretary for Transport and Energy, Lui Naisara.

Mr Naisara emphasised the importance of public safety and the use of lifejackets at all times while on board any vessel.

He stressed the importance of ensuring the use of lifejackets in small boats and punts like those carting passengers at Bau Landing and along the Rewa River.

“Life jackets are affordable. It is there for them to buy before they make any of those trips, get their passengers to wear them because normally for each vessel there should be the right number of life jackets on board,” Mr Naisara said.

“If you do not have life jackets, I advise people not to take that trip. Don’t risk it, even if it’s just for two minutes ride because anything can happen out at sea or on the water.”

Government officials and enforcement agencies including the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) officials are checking safety equipment in vessels.

Mr Naisara said it was important for boats –  big or small to comply with the law.

He said people needed to act responsibly while on board maritime transportation.

“It is not just the MSAF that just does the work, in terms of safety it is everybody’s concern.

“If you see a boat overloading, then as a passenger you should have the decency to tell the boat master that, “You are overloading, you cannot take any more passengers and we are not going with you.”

“Once you make the decision to go in an overloaded boat and also without life jacket, you are endangering your life.”

He said people needed to speak out and inform enforcement agencies if such things had been happening.

He said those caught overloading were likely to lose their licence or be fined.
