The three winning entries of the Water Authority of Fiji’s (WAF) in-house design for a new Fiji flag have been entered into the national flag design competition.

This was announced by WAF chief executive officer Opetaia Ravai while presenting the three WAF employees their prizes.

“It is a good show of patriotism among our staff to be able to contribute to something of national significance; the design of our new Fiji Flag,” Mr Ravai said.

He said symbols used in the winning design referred to the Fijian culture and heritage, with the coconut tree representing our island nation and the Masi directly relating to the iTaukei culture.

The 15 stars depict the 14 provinces and Rotuma, the dove, a symbol of peace and unity and the blue background for the “noble banner blue” as in the Fijian national anthem.

Mitesh Baran – whose design won the in-house competition’s top prize – said he wanted to show something which directly related to Fijian tradition and culture.

He said he entered the competition because of his love for his country.

Second prize went to Albert Burt and third prize to Lavinia Vulawalu.
