Zaid Engineering Limited, a company specialising in mechanical engineering, became the centre of attention this week as it scooped two top Occupational Health and Safety Awards.

The Labasa-based company was awarded Best Practice Award in the Medium Enterprise category and the Overall Best Practice Award.

This was during the Government-organised World OHS Day Awards 2015 held at the Holiday Inn Suva.

The organisations awarded were inspected and found to meet the minimum OHS requirements as stipulated under the Health and Safety and Work Act 1996 and its subsidiary legislations.

Zaid Engineering managing director, Daud Hussein, said it was a special achievement not only for the company but Labasa as well.

But as anyone would know, attaining this recognition, looking at the nature of work of the company, would not be easy.

Mr Hussein said there are a lot of policies they have to follow and this in fact had been audited by the Ministry of Labour.

“We have our “Tool Box” meeting in the morning where the guys come in and before any works begins, they have a brief discussion on their activities for the day,” he said.

“This is to ensure they wear their safety gears like safety glasses, helmets, safety boots etc.

“This is basically what everybody discusses and everybody signs off if they have all the safety gears.”

Mr Hussein said he was especially happy with the recognition given the company was from Labasa.

“We, the people from Labasa, are always neglected but this is a big achievement for our company and Labasa,” he said.

“I am very happy that we have been rewarded for the hard work of the management and the employees.”

Zaid Engineering Limited was formed by Mr Hussein’s father in the 1970’s in Labasa.

Mr Hussein said they normally handle oil companies’ projects like working at their terminals and work sites.

“We do a lot of work for Government statutory bodies like for example dredging works,” he said.
