His thoughts for the future generation were the driving force in entering the National Flag competition which ended yesterday.

Sixty-seven-year-old John Fatiaki is among many Fijians who had submitted their flag design in a bid to contest for the designing of a new Fijian flag.

Mr Fatiaki of Upu, Malhaha, Rotuma, believes that although Fiji had gained Independence in 1970, it had not fully gained it. He said Fiji would only be fully independent when a new flag came into being.

Mr Fatiaki has a blend of red, blue and white colours on his flag design with a dove picking a Tagimoucia flower and a Bua-ni-Viti (frangipani) and three big stars surrounded by 16 small stars.

He said his design was also based on the 2013 Fijian Constitution.

Below are the meanings of the features on his flag design:

– The red, white and noble banner blue stars (three big stars) represent the three Fijian confederacies – Kubuna, Tovata and Burebesaga.

“Together with the chiefs  and all Fijian people with their families who lived and settled and also built and develop framework of our Fijian Constitution on its Page One [1] ‘PREAMBLE’ it reads, ‘We the People of Fiji recognising, in article one to eight accordingly.”

– The 16 noble banner blue stars represent Rotuma, Rabi and 14 Fijian provinces of the Republic of Fiji.

– The dove with branches of the Fijian native flowers, the ‘Tagimoucia’and the ‘Bua-ni-Viti’ represent peace, love and harmony and the future of our disciplined forces who are committed to helping world peace.

– The three stars will be a living land mark at all times in the military parade, sports and the vanua around the world.
