A 61-year-old mother and grandmother, Latchmi Goundar, died at Nadovi, Nadi, yesterday when she was burned inside her home.

The fire occurred while family members were away at the Nadovi Sangam Temple for prayers. Ms Goundar was at home with her grandson and two neighbours.

Her nephew, Muttu Naidu, said:

“I was on my way to the shop when I saw the smoke from the house; then I saw her run back inside to save her belongings but she was trapped by the fire,” Mr Naidu said.

“I tried three times to save her and the neighbours also tried. When she eventually got out she collapsed on the porch,” he said.

National Fire Authority chief executive officer John O’Connor confirmed receiving and dispatching fire trucks from the Nadi Fire Station at 3.08pm.

“By the time they arrived, the fire had spread, “he said.
