International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach strongly believes the inclusion of Rugby 7s in the 2016 Rio Olympics will be a great opportunity for the Oceania nations.

“The inclusion of 7s rugby will open many doors for Oceania nations to participate and win medals at the Rio Olympic Games,” Bach said.

The IOC boss also applauded the development 7s rugby in the Oceania region.

“The development has been good and in the process producing good players like those participating at the 2014 Commonwealth Games,” he said. “It’s been good to see how people preparing for the 2015 Pacific Games in PNG together with the participation of Australia and New Zealand.

“I think this message is going far beyond sport.

“Athletes are reaching the qualification standards for Olympics. IOC is supporting this by giving scholarships.

“We are looking forward for a strong representation of Oceania in the 2016 Rio Olympics.”

With the 2015 Pacific Games in July, Bach stressed the importance of the inclusion  of Australia and New Zealand.

“It is very hard when you come to the Olympic Games and you meet strong competition from other countries..

“So you need to have strong competition to compete if you are to make a mark at the Olympic Games.”

US$500,000 boost for Vanuatu

The IOC allocated $500,000 to assist with Vanuatu National Olympic Committee rehabilitation work

“I’m really looking forward to visit Vanuatu next week,” he said.

“We still feel with the Vanuatu after they devasted by a Cyclone Pam.

Bach will visit Vanuatu tomorrow.
