Nothing could explain the joy and smiles on the faces of the Year One students of Lakeba in Lau when they received their first batch of free Rewa Life milk and Weet-Bix from Government.

The Free Milk for Schools programme was started for Ratu Finau Primary School, Waciwaci District School and Delaiverata Primary School on the island.

The Minister for Health, Jone Usamate, who was on the island opening the new nurses’ quarters at the Lakeba Sub-Divisional Hospital, distributed the milk to the students. Free textbooks were also distributed to schools.

The Government’s distributation of Rewa Life milk and Weet-Bix is supported by C.J. Patel and Fiji Dairy Limited.

Ratu Finau Primary School headteacher Joana Rekibalavu commended the initiative.

“We are very thankful to Government and the Ministry of Education.

This would boost the students’ health and intellect,” Ms Rekibalavu said.

She said students did not have the opportunity to drink milk everyday because of their location.

Waciwaci District School headteacher Inoke Covutimabula said the initiative would also boost the student’s attendance.

“You know how students are, this gives them a reason to look forward to coming to school,” Mr Covutimabula said.

He said the school community was sincerely thankful to Government for the free milk and free textbooks.

“We were accessing textbooks from the internet because there were not many copies.

“It’s a big relief for us now that we’ve been supplied more copies.”

Meanwhile, 16 schools in the northern Lau were distributed free milk and textbooks by a team from the Ministry of Education who were part of the Commissioner Eastern Division’s 19-day tour.
