Kill Suspect Complains Of Sexual Abuse

A man facing murder charges with another alleged in the High Court in Suva yesterday that he was  sexually and physically abused at the Fiji Corrections Service Remand Centre in Suva.

Samuel Kaci and Apenisa Tubakilakeba, who are facing murder charges, appeared before Justice Salesi Temo yesterday.

Kaci, through his lawyer, requested the Court to grant him time to make formal complaints of sexual and physical abuse at the centre.

He claims to have been sexually and physically abused by two senior Corrections officials and had also been threatened by Corrections officers.

Two senior Corrections officials were  named in Court yesterday.

Justice Temo granted Kaci permission to be taken to Totogo Police Station to lodge a formal complaint on the matter before being taken back to the centre.

Kaci and Tubakilakeba are charged with the murder of a 45-year-old man outside a Suva nightclub last February.

The two were involved in a brawl inside the Islanders Nightclub where they were alleged to have punched and stomped on the victim.

The victim was admitted at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but died last March from the injuries sustained.

Meanwhile, Tubakilakeba has been granted bail on strict conditions. He is placed on a curfew from 6pm to 6am daily.

Trial proper is scheduled for April next year while the pre-trial conference has been schedule for June 24, this year.
