The Oceania National Olympic Committee (ONOC) held its first Market Sports Day at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Suva yesterday.

ONOC Athletes Commission member/ Cook Islands Athletes Commission chairperson Julz Westrupp said this was a great platform to engage countries and athletes into different sports.

“This is an opportunity for the National Olympic Committees (NOC) from the different countries, to come and see what is available and what they don’t have in their own country,” Westrupp said.

A total of 10 sporting federations were present which were World Rugby, Oceania Athletics, Sports Matters, Oceania Hockey, OSFO (Organisation of Sports Federations of Oceania), Gymnastics Australia, Oceania Handball Federation, Griffth University, Baseball Oceania, Cricket Fiji and suppliers Beyong Limits Known (BLK) and Unitex.

“We also have suppliers of sportswear, as you know we have the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea coming up, so a lot of the countries may not have planned for uniforms as yet,” she said.

“So this is just a foot in the door to get them to be able to see what suppliers are available and what they don’t have in their countries. So it’s about bringing everybody together so they can see what they can possibly have in their country.

“It’s an opportunity for the International Federations to grow their sport as well.”

Westrupp said the main focus was on the athletes as without them sports would not exist.

“At the end of the day it’s all about the athletes, without our athletes we wouldn’t have anything.
