Fishermen and market vendors in the Western Division can now sell their catches in the newly-constructed fish market at the Lautoka Port Complex.

Taniela Kunarara, a Lautoka resident who works as a free diver, has been in the fish catching business for the past 20 years.

“It has been 10 months for me in Lautoka but all this while I had been selling my catch on the pavement in the hot sun.

“This market is very good for the fish as it will not receive the sun or the rain anymore and get bad easily.

“I catch many kinds of fish, such as saqa, cod, ulavi and parrot fish every time I go diving and it is not easy.

“I have dived and caught fish and sold it for my living to support my wife and daughter for years.

“Now my daughter is married and also has a daughter of her own but I continue to dive and catch fish.”

The 43-year-old diver does not fear the sea or the dangers associated with it as he relies on his diving skills.

“I am able to tell if the weather will be good for diving or not. So I do not see any risk in the waters,” he said.

Another person in the fish-selling business is 50-year-old Miriama Tasere from Navutu, who has also been selling fish for years.

Her husband, who was unable to attend the opening, is a seasonal diver. She sells his catch to make a living.
