Making sports compulsory in schools is something the International Olympic Committee is hoping to do in the region with their 2020 agenda.

IOC president Thomas Bach said Fiji was not alone in the Oceania region, where obesity threatened the population.

“Oceania can benefit. It is the role of sports in society. The ONOC has to see what sports can do in the Oceania region with regards to health and education,” he said.

“I had the opportunity to talk to the President of Fiji about about the role of sports in education to make sport mandatory and physical education for all kids.

“The issue of the cohesion of sports for society is also a challenge in some of the Oceania countries.

“Sports as a unifying factor. This is key to the Olympic agenda, the other key is the youth. We want to have more youths playing sports compared to watching sports only.” Pacnews
