More than 25 women of TISI Maarthar Sangam will start earning extra cash for the club after the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, donated 15 new sewing machines for the club at Labasa Sangam College yesterday.

“I believe the group has been complementing the work that we do as a ministry – that is assisting the disadvantaged members of our community,” Ms Akbar said.

She said the ministry’s role was to empower, improve lives of women and encourage women to work very closely with ministry officials.

“I know that being a woman is such a big challenge because we have to overcome a lot of obstacles in our lives,” Ms Akbar said.

She said the ministry was happy that women were speaking out now.

“With the new sewing machines, these are tools that you engage in activities that will bring income to your families.”

She hopes that the group will put the machines to good use so that it can make money for the group.

Group president Indra Narayan said they were fortunate to receive the sewing machines.

“This will really boost the group in terms of income-generating projects,” Mrs Narayan said.

The group has been involved on projects like sewing, virgin oil production, cooking and flower arrangement.
