A student’s desire to contribute towards the Fijian economy has been the driving force behind her joining the army.

Vani Kalamailagi Tuvusa, 18, was among the 200 female and 51 male recruits that marched into the Force Training Group in Nasinu yesterday. She was a Year 13 student at Khalsa College in Ba before deciding to join the military.

Vani believes that when she is deployed for overseas mission after her recruitment, she will be able to contribute to the country’s economy.

She said her urge to join the army also came from the difficulties she had faced since childhood.

“I come from a broken family and my family is not well-off so I want to do this to help my guardians who are looking after us,” Vani said.

“My guardians have also been encouraging me a lot to apply and I’m so happy that I was able to get through because I am now certain that I am able to have a source of income to support our family.”

Her guardian Vili Naulu, 37, could not express her emotions while farewelling her daughter at FTG yesterday.

Mrs Naulu said she and her husband Meli Nalulu, 42, had been looking after Vani since birth and was grateful she had started the journey to pursuing a dream they also had for her.

“We faced financial constraints when sending her to school since only my husband was working but now we are pretty relieved,” she said.

The 251 male and female recruits will undergo a three-month basic recruitment course before they graduate.
