Shiu Ranjani had no idea she was saying goodbye to her husband for the last time when he left for work yesterday morning.

Husband Rafiq Shah was hit and killed by a bus at Laucala Beach Estate at about 8am.

Police said the 54-year-old was walking along Nokonoko Road when a Dee Cees bus, driven by a 39-year-old, veered off the road, hit a lamp post before hitting the victim.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the victim was rushed to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital where he later died.

Ms Ranjani, 53, said they had breakfast together before she bid him goodbye yesterday.

“All our six children are married and we are renting our own home in Davuilevu Housing. When he left this morning I said goodbye to him, I never dreamed this would happen to him,” Ms Ranjani said.

She said their family had just held the funeral of a nephew, her husband’s brother’s son, last Friday.

“Today is only the fourth day after his burial and the death of my husband has come as a real shock especially as we are still in mourning,” Ms Ranjani said.

She said her husband will be sadly missed by everyone in the family.

“We’ve been married for 16 years; he’s always good and very polite. He’s a family man and loved by his children.”

She said the funeral was planned to take place today.

The bus will be examined by LTA officers as Police continue investigations.
