Lifeguard Training To Set Benchmark In Safety

Fiji currently does not have any official lifeguard training but this will not be the case anymore as of today.

A course organised by Fiji Surf Company is designed to conduct a week-long workshop from today in Nadi.

Fiji Surf Co has taken the initiative to bring into the country one of the best lifeguard operations in the world – APOLA (Australian Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association).

This course at the Fiji Surf Headquarters warehouse on Nacovi Beach outside Nadi is to train/accredit their staff members and others interested.

The lifeguard course is quite extensive when looking at what the itinerary holds.

Local surf legend, Ian Muller, who owns and operates Fiji Surf Co, sees this as a golden opportunity for the locals.

“The itinerary includes Jet Ski rescues, tube/board rescue techniques, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, water-based spinal care and usage of De-Fib units to name a few,” he said.

“All participants are to pass a gruelling swim and run test under a certain time frame as it is a requirement.”

Mr Muller says so far the turn out and interests shown in this course has been quite encouraging for the company.

“Fiji as a tourism destination has to take the onus on ourselves to look after our patrons, setting a benchmark in safety,” he said.

“This will have a flow on affect into our community and villages to bring down our rising drowning toll.

“We have been fortunate to have these visionary sponsors: APOLA, Bred Bank, Red Bull, Fijian Water Patrol and Fiji Surf Co to bring such a critical initiative to Fiji.”

Mr Mullar hopes this training will inspire others to do the same and down the track possible training facilities.

He looks into lifeguards who can be part of the Occupational Health and Safety of all resorts and public swimming pools in Fiji.
