Ministry Probes Splinter Group

The Ministry of the iTaukei Affairs has ordered an internal investigation on the group involved in the setting up of so called “autonomus Christians states” in Fiji.

The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Savenaca Kaunisela, confirmed this to the Fiji Sun yesterday.

“We have contacted the RokoTui in all the provinces, esppecially for Ra and Nadroga/Navosa to be alert against this rebel group and send in regular reports to the office,” Mr Kaunisela said.

He said members of the so-called autonomous Christians states had been travelling between Ra and Nadroga/Navosa. The latest report from the Roko Tui Ra, Marika Nakoroi, confirmed the group was in Ra, but chiefs in the province did not support the formation of autonomous Christian states.

Mr Kaunisela said the Roko Tui Ra in his report singled out the woman holding the chiefly title at Natuia who supported the group.

This particular chief, he said, had however withdrawn her support from the group and was now with other chiefs in the province supporting Government.

He said the group should be taken to task as members were just trying to split the iTaukei people.

The action of the group, he said, was illegal and called on the Fiji Police Force to carry out a thorough investigation on what they were doing.

Their action, he said, was against the Crimes Decree 2009, under the heading Treason And Other Offences Against Government Authority 63, treason or any acts of seditious nature are classified as a crime.

In addition, they had also breached the Constitution; Section 2 (6) says any attempt to establish a Government other than in compliance with this Constitution shall be unlawful.

Mr Kaunisela said all Roko Tui had been told to report all activities carried out by this group.
