The Zanana Muslim League in Labasa received a timely boost of 15 sewing machines from the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty yesterday.

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Rosy Akbar handed over the machines on Sunday at the Labasa Muslim Primary School.

Ms Akbar said her ministry was partnering with faith-based and culturally-based organisations to realise the dreams that they had for every women in Fiji.

“I understand that at times there are cultural barriers but there will be changes,” Ms Akbar said.

“We will work together to ensure women progress as the world progresses because the sleeping beauties have woken.

“The Government of the day led by our Prime Minister is very committed to the progress of women across the nation,” she said.

“We will ensure we don’t leave a group behind and let the others progress.”

She noted there were funds allocated to her ministry committed to upskilling women to developing their entrepreneurial skills.

“Through an agreement with the Fiji Muslim Women’s League (FMWL) we were able to support their newly-built Vocational Training Centre at Makoi.

“The centre will be open to women, young and old, regardless of race, religion or culture to learn employable or income-generating skills where our ministry is part of the initiative.”

She said it spoke volumes of the commitment of the league’s leadership towards empowering women economically.

“We hope and pray that we open a similar centre in a partnership with the women in the North.

Zanana Muslim League, Vanua Levu president Nazma Ibrahim said they were very thankful to the Bainimarama Government for their support.
