The Ministry of Health & Medical Services is looking at improving quality through boosting leadership.

This was revealed by the Minister for Health and Medical Services Jone Usamate in Suva.

He was a guest speaker at the senior leadership training for the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and was asked by the Fiji Sun on his reflections after eight months in office.

Mr Usamate said his focus right now was improving leadership within his ministry.

“I’ve found we need to focus on is leadership right across the ministry. That’s why we have introduced a leadership model earlier in the organisation,” he said.

“It has been introduced and it has been rolled out. It’s a model we developed we called it the 5E’s 1P model, the characteristics we want to see in leaders – energy, energisers, edge, execute, empathy and passion.”

Meanwhile, Minister for Infrastructure & Transport Pio Tikoduadua said his ministry faced several challenges as well.

“The biggest challenge is the many deaths on the road,” he said.

Mr Tikoduadua said one of the ministry’s main roles was prioritising and addressing issues it faced.

“For us a normal day is receiving complaints. There’s always a leaking tap, a pothole somewhere. We have a process; we prioritise and address it as soon as we can,” he said.

“It’s not that the ministry is not doing its work, it’s normal part of work.”
