Work to formalise Galoa and Dranikula settlements in Serua as villages will start next week.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary for iTaukei Affairs Board, Apakuki Kurusiga, said the boundaries of the two villages had been surveyed and they were to be gazetted and registered as villages very soon.

Now that it has been revealed by a retired teacher that the two villages were on crown land, they had to work quickly to revert the land back to Native land.

He said officials of the ministry, Lands Department, the Roko Tui Serua and the retired teacher would meet next week to look into the matter.

Mr Kurusiga had established that this land was under Crown Grant (GC) when a survey of all iTaukei land started.

“The surveyors did not survey Crown Grant lands,” he said.

He said after the consultations at Galoa, some elders at Dranikula said they had signed an agreement with the Public Trustees in 2013 to make Dranikula a village.

They cross-checked with the Public Trustees and there was no record of this.
