Flowers And Song For Mum

Mother’s Day celebration came in many forms yesterday.

While many marked the day with their mothers in churches, family gatherings and feasts, some families paid tribute to their late mums.

This included 59-year-old Elizabeth Fong Dominiko and her husband Antonio of Raiwai, Suva.

Mother’s Day every year is spent at Mrs Dominiko’s parents’ grave at the Chinese Cemetery at Reservoir Road, Suva. The parents – Michael Willie (1930 – 1977) and Unaisi Elizabeth Fong (1933 – 2008) were buried in the same grave.

“We normally visit my parents’ grave and other family members on Mother’s Day, Christmas, Easter, and All souls Day where Catholics remember the dead and dedicate the day for them which lies on November 2,” Mrs Dominiko said.

“I usually get a big bunch of carefully arranged flowers for my mum on Mother’s Day. This year we got her a bunch from my daughter’s home garden.”

Mrs Dominiko also sang a song for her late mum yesterday. She said she sang the same song every year.

Mr Edward Seeto, 80, was accompanied by his son, Trevor to the same cemetery to visit his late wife’s grave yesterday.

“We normally come down every month to the cemetery to clean her grave. We did not cement her grave because she loved gardening,” Mr Trevor said.

“Today (yesterday) is extra special because it is Mother’s Day,” he said.
