It was mission accomplished for the Vodafone Fijian 7s team after qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics yesterday.

This was achieved after Ben Ryan–coached side reached the Cup quarterfinal of the 2015 Glasgow 7s

The Fijians defeated Wales 40-17, Portugal 40-12 and Scotland 45-5.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama led the praise for the side, conveying all of Fiji was united in their pride and joy with the landmark achievement.

“I think we’re all excited and proud that they have made it to the Rio Olympics,” he said.

“This is a very big achievement which I’m sure we’re all happy with. I don’t think there was much doubt that they would be able to qualify. So congratulations to the boys for a job well done.”

Iliesa Delana: Great achievement

Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports and Paralympic gold medallist Iliesa Delana echoed similar sentiments, believing this would set a new benchmark for all sports in the country.

“This is very proud and historic moment for all of Fiji. Congratulations to the national 7s side for becoming the first team to qualify for the Rio Olympics and it’s certainly going to be a special one for them having worked towards this as a team over the past year.

“It’s important to note the hard work, time and investment that they’ve put into this. They put in the work as a team and they’ve qualified as a team so it’s a great achievement for them no doubt.

“As for the team, they’ve made it now and that’s what this is about; competing and participating in the Olympics, not winning or losing. It is a huge honour for any athlete to go to the Olympics and compete there, regardless of the outcome.”

Ryan: Fantastic day for Fiji

Ryan shared the same sentiment following the win.

“It feels a little bit emotional. We’ve put in so much work to get to this stage and I know everyone on the island will be delighted with this. It’s really a fantastic day for Fiji.”

Kolinisau: Dream come true

Skipper Osea Kolinisau said it was a proud moment for the team to celebrate a mission accomplished.

“We’ve made it into the Olympics. It’s been a long road. There are plenty of top teams in the series. We’ve worked hard towards it.

“The boys were really proud about making it to Rio and it probably means a lot to Fiji as a whole because it is the first time that a team of athletes will go to the Olympics and contest to win a medal. It’s a dream come true to be an Olympian.”

Fiji became the second side to score one of the four automatic berths to next year’s Olympics after winning all the pool games. Current series table leader South Africa have also qualified, Brazil being the host country and England representing Great Britain.
