1702 Groups Registered: Ministry

There are 1702 women’s groups that have registered with the National Women’s Expo, says the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation.

Using the expo, the ministry aims to build self-esteem, moral and confidence in Fijian women.

Line minister, Rosy Akbar said the expo would be an annual event which could create new marketing opportunities for women.

“The expo will encourage the production of better quality and higher value products displayed during the craft show, particularly women in rural and maritime areas who have immense talents. They require marketing opportunities,” Ms Akbar said.

She said the expo and divisional craft shows this year were based on the theme Connecting Women to Markets, Making it Happen.

“It will strengthen existing markets that are available at divisional level for rural women. It will also identify best artisans groomed for a larger platform like the National Expo and connect them to markets at the national and international level.

“Particularly women in rural and maritime areas who have immense talents, yet they require marketing opportunities.”

“The Fijian Government has allocated $500,000 for this year’s expo.” The ministry has partnered with the Fiji Arts Council, Ministry of Health and Medical Services and Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism to organise divisional craft shows.

The expo will be in Suva from the October 14 – 16.
