Labasa Death Probe Continues

Police continue investigation into the death of Nischal Rahul Chand who was found dead inside his home last Sunday at Anuve Settlement in Lovelove, Bulileka, Labasa.

Chand, 14, was found dead on his parents’ bed with his father’s pigeon-hunting air rifle (gun).

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said they had been trying to link the rifle to Rahul’s death.

An inquest file has been opened to look into the causes and circumstances surrounding the death, Ms Naisoro said.

She said an independent investigation had also been conducted.

It was reported that after 10pm last Sunday, the victim’s elder brother returned home with some sweets to find him (Rahul) dead on his parent’s bed with the rifle by his side.

Rahul, who was to turn 15 in September, was cremated at the Bulileka Cemetery in Labasa last Friday.

“We asked him a few times if he wanted to attend his cousin’s wedding, but he said he did not want to,” his father, Rajeshwar said.

“Before when we go anywhere, he will say no, but then he would cut across the sugarcane field and surprise us halfway through to scare us in a playful manner.

“On that day I thought he would do that, but he never came,” Mr Chand said.

“The gun is mine and I am a licensed owner and I kept it (gun) in a safe place.

“He knew about my gun because he is my pet. Whenever we go shooting he would accompany me and asked me how to operate it, but I never let him touch it,” he said.
