Parents play a very important role in helping the school provide the best possible education and experience for maritime students.

This is the opinion of the Fiji Maritime Academy chief executive officer, Captain Suren Gurusinghe.

In light of this, the Academy hosted a parents/guardian interview last Friday.

Captain Gurusinghe said they had an inclusive Academy, they have always encouraged and valued parental interest and involvement in all aspects of their academy life.

A seafarer’s life is not as rosy as it sounds, there are many challenges.

Captain Gurusinghe said the audience with the parents has enabled them to promote positive partnership between home and the Academy in terms of communication and understanding.

“Our parents should know the school and the school should know the parents. So the parents and students interview will enhance that relationship.”

“In other words, parents should know how to contact the school when they want to speak with their child as students are not allowed to carry mobile phones during class.”

ACADEMY UPDATE

The Academy had a special consultation talks with key fisheries stakeholders over a proposed fisheries course.

Captain Gurusinghe said they have a set curriculum; however, they needed to know what the fisheries industry needs.

“We want to train fishermen to become professionals at sea for it is well paid if they go on foreign vessels.”

He added that Fiji is blessed with oceans around us and the fishing industry is a huge income earner.
