Sailax Shipping & Freight Forwarding Ltd started with  one goal – to offer an affordable freight service for the Fijian community living in New Zealand.

But its clientele grew from being community-based to attracting commercial businesses, especially the construction industry.

Managing director, Suresh Mani left Fiji 12 years ago after working in Customs to be with his parents and in search of greener pastures.

He worked for three years in other companies before deciding to open a business of his own.

While majority of his business is focused in air freight, Mr Mani said shipping had become a major drive for his company.

“It’s one of the those reasons the shipping line and the forwarders out of the New Zealand are raking quite a lot or doing a lot of business with Fiji,” Mr Mani said.

As a result, two years ago, Sailax Shipping & Freight Forwarding parted ways with Carpenters Shipping Services (Fiji) Limited in order to expand its own reach and client base.

“Basically what we are doing is a one-stop shop. So it’s better service with the clients,” Mr Mani said.

In doing so, costs can be reduced, he believes.

“It’s no secret that trade between the two nations has increased even more so after elections,” Mr Mani said.

“We’ve sent numerous building equipment out of New Zealand to Fiji. Quotations and inquiries received are just massive.

“Fiji depends on Australia and New Zealand for a lot of imports and we have been doing a lot of imports from New Zealand to Fiji.

“In Fiji we don’t do many exports but we’re getting into that.”

The company based along  Edinburgh’s Drive in Suva recently opened office in Nadi to cater for the aviation hub and also the Lautoka Port.

In future, the company plans to open a warehouse too as it strives to offer the favoured freighting service here and in New Zealand.
