Village Youths Repair Drainage

Villagers of Vuo at Malau outside Labasa Town have welcomed the upgrading of their drainage system.

This is after their village youth group carried out improvements to their drainage system helping avoid flooding and also creating a healthier environment.

The village had endured this flooding problem for more than 14 years eveytime it rained.

Village headman Reverend Apenisa Rabai said constructing the drain would cost them $3000.

“The project includes redirecting drainage system to help the flow of water, thus helping village to be flood free,” Reverend Rabai said.

The village headman, who had taken the effort to help fund the work, said village members had been worried over the health effects from continuous floods.

“As long as flooding is diverted, our homes and our health are safe from diseases like typhoid,” he said.

“Most of the village children often contract typhoid during floods, hence the construction of the drain would benefit our village health as well.”

The 30-plus youth group members are actively involved in many village developments including the beautification of their village as part of their five-year project plan.
