Taniela Korai, 58, was grateful to the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation after being given a brand new brushcutter by the Minister, Rosy Akbar, at the Civic House on Wednesday.

Taniela Korai, from Waikete in Tailevu, said he was so happy to receive the brushcutter which he will now use it to earn income for his family.

“I just want to thank the Government for making this possible. I receive money from social welfare but the Minister told me to apply for this so I can work for my money instead of relying on Government,” he said.

Ms Akbar highlighted during the handover of grants to voluntary organisations on Wednesday that her Ministry was in partnership with the National Centre for Small Micro Enterprise Development (NCSMED).

“NCSMED provides entreprenrenual training and monitoring of small micro enterprise. With this assistance today, we are proud of their support to capitalise on the vision of the ministry in graduating social welfare recipients from ‘welfare to workfare’,” Ms Akbar said.

She said her ministry was aiming to put 120 recipients into this programme this year.
