Fijian Holdings Limited Group chief executive Nouzab Fareed has been named the President of the Fiji Institute of Accountants yesterday.

This followed the organisation’s annual general meeting at the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort and Spa, Yanuca Island.

The AGM occurred on the sidelines of the Fiji Institute of Accountant’s annual congress.

Mr Fareed steps up from his previous role as the vice president and said he looked forward to serving the accounting community.

“I definitely want to do some changes so that the members demands are met,” he said.

One of his aims is to popularise accounting in schools.

This was because of the low number of chartered accountants currently in the country, Mr Fareed said.

“For a country of 890,000 people, we have only 285 chartered accountants as of December 31, 2014,” he stated.

“This has to be improved because the country needs more chartered accountants and certified practicing accountants. That is my aim.”

Mr Fareed says the FIA will work with Government to achieve its objectives within the financial sector.
