The sugarcane crushing season starts June 17 in Labasa.

And as this gets underway, a meeting was held by the Committee for Better Utilisation of Lands (CBUL) on Thursday at the Boubale Arya Samaj Mandir.

The meeting was held for farmers who had productivity problems and looking at counteracting issues that brought this about.

While responding to the queries Amirka Prasad the FSC Labasa Mill Field Advisory manager said they had listened to issues raised and will act on them accordingly.

“A few sessions there were land issues like lease problem and finding difficulties especially with the long process of getting a lease while some are electricity, water problems and roads problems.

“Their concerns have been noted with the team which will be taken up at the national level and then we will follow up with them.”

He noted preparations are well underway for next month with Labasa Mill’s forecast at 600,000 tonnes. It hopes to crush between 4000 tonnes to 5000 tonnes on the first day.

Farmer Rajesh Chandra said: “We thank the government for this kind of talanoa sessions where some sort of assistance will be given to us in terms of securing labourers so that we will be able to plant more cane on our vacant land.

Major sugarcane season problems are shortage of labourers, damaged bridges and water problems.
