Landowners Get Mahogany Money: PM

Prime Minister and Minister for iTaukei Affairs and the Sugar Industry Voreqe Bainimarama said there was previously no proper accounting controls in the Fiji Hardwood Corporation.

He said the Government invested $15.9m as an operating grant into Fiji Hardwood Corporation between 1998 to 2003 but it was only under his Government that the industry had really come of age.

He was responding to a question by Opposition member Kiniviliame Kiliraki on the key role of the Fiji Mahogany Trust.

He also clarified monies paid to land-owners and indicated the years and corresponding amounts paid.

“In 2014 Fiji Hardwood has paid $13.12m to landowners and of this – $3.4m was paid directly to TLTB for the landowners, $4.5m has been paid to TLTB, over $665,799 is the payment for land management fees which is paid directly to landowners $870,000 for reforestation and plantation maintenance payments and $3.65m is for contactors.”
