Our Diaspora Granted Dual Citizenship

The Fiji Consulate General’s Office in Sydney held its second citizenship ceremony last week, welcoming the Fijian diaspora who have chosen to take back their Fijian citizenship.

This provision is possible under the Citizenship of Fiji Decree No. 23 of 2009.

Fiji’s High Commissioner to Australia Yogesh Punja officiating at the ceremony said: “Many of you would have migrated to Australia for the opportunities afforded by this great country.

“Your contributions have indeed made Australia a fine example of a successful multicultural society, and a successful immigrant nation.”

He urged the dual citizens to “take lessons learned from their exposure in Australia, return home and to further develop our little nation, invest, and if you can, resettle”.

Consul General Losana Ravuso said that, “we are indeed grateful to Government, for the vision and foresight for Decree No. 23 of 2009, allowing Fijians to hold more than one citizenship and enabling our diaspora who have migrated the opportunity to choose to become Fijian citizens once again and return to contribute constructively to our beloved homeland.”

Effective from May 10, 2009, Fijian diaspora can now apply to regain their Fijian citizenship for the purpose of coming back home to invest or retire.

The Consulate General’s Office have received 150 multiple citizenship applications since 2011.
