Netball Fiji raised $136,000 at a cocktail fundraising event held at the Holiday Inn Suva last Friday night.

The event, which was attended by businesshouses, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, Cabinet ministers and supporters, was in aid of the 2015 Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia in August and the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea in July.

Netball Fiji president Wainikiti Bogidrau was grateful for the enormous support.

“We are just so thankful for the support and we’re definitely humbled by it,” Bogidrau said.

“This is to help us on our road to Sydney and it does not stop here. There are other companies who were not present at the event but will be donating as well later on in the week.

“We have also applied for a Government grant and we are just waiting to see what happens with that.

“We have quite an intensive and expensive programme which is part of our road to Sydney campaign.

“Unlike some of our brothers and sisters in other sports, netball does not derive any financial assistance from our parent body, the International Netball Federation (INF).

“That’s why we rely heavily on our business communities to assist us and it is great to know that we are worth their investment.”

Prime Minister Bainimarama was the chief guest at the cocktail and also launched the event saying while Fiji is a rugby nation, netball is also a sport we should recognise.

“The Pearls have been the undisputed champions of the Pacific and the team has held a number of world rankings since 2011.

“It’s an extraordinary record that has brought great credit to the sport.

“It is up to us give them the financial support they need to achieve that goal and take Fiji up another level.”
