The hype was on as Rotuman farmers from the island’s seven districts took part in a competition to find out who harvested the best and biggest rootcrops during the Rotuma Day celebrations at the FMF Gymnasium in Laucala Bay, Suva, yesterday.

More than 100 Rotuman farmers displayed different sized rootcrops at the agriculture show – with as much as eight varieties of yams, some weighing as heavy as 50 kilograms.

Chairperson of the Rotuma Agriculture show Paserio Samisoni said their farmers usually looked forward to displaying their hard work every year.

“Our applicants pay a sub of $50 and do this as their backyard farming and every year our completion gets bigger and better,” he said.

Mr Samisoni added the agriculture show was to encourage all Rotumans to continue or take up backyard farming to save money and continue the technique of Rotuman planting.

“The district of Pepjei won the overall competition last year and looks almost certain to take it again this year, but at the moment competition is stiff,” he said.

The winning yam will be shared among the chief guest, church priests and to those who contributed to the competition and participants will be awarded points, whereby every point earns the participant $15.
