Social worker students currently undergoing study at the University of the South Pacific have shown interest to help the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) in the rehabilitation of inmates.

This is after the FCS took part in the USP two-day Careers Expo that was held at the USP car park last week.

Community liaison officer and FCS Yellow Ribbon co-ordinator Isireli Dausiga said more than 70 social worker students visited their booth.

The students then expressed interest in assisting the FCS.

Mr Dausiga said the response from the students was overwhelming and encouraging in terms of changing mindset towards ex-offenders.

“This was the good news to us to have people interested to assist us in terms of rehabilitating those under our care. At the moment, we are working round the clock to minimise the number of recidivists and young people from entering into a life of crime,” he said.

Mr Dausiga said such career expos would enable young people to understand what the FCS did in terms of addressing offending behaviour of those under their custody.

“I thank the USP management for allowing FCS to be part of this annual event and we will continue to take part for such worthy initiatives in future,” he said.
