It was a relief to teachers, students and parents of Rotuma when free textbooks were issued to schools on the island last week.

Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Rural Development and Disaster Management Joeli Cawaki issued the textbooks to headteachers of several schools during the Rotuma Day Celebration last Wednesday.

Speaking on behalf of the teachers, Rotuma High School Principal Robin Henry said they were sincerely thankful to Government for its commitment to education.

“This is a great initiative by Government.

“It reduces the burden on parents and will assist grassroots families greatly,” Mr Henry said.

He said students will learn better now with the number of textbooks available.

Luisa Petero of Itumuta Village said they were very happy about the assistance.

“We thank Government for putting so much emphasis on education and for sending out its representatives to come out all the way to Rotuma despite how remote it is and provide free textbooks for our children,” Ms Petero said.

Nicholas Jeff of Pepjei Village said the free text books would help parents a lot.

“Especially because we stay out here in the villages and the source of income is very limited,” Mr Jeff said.
