People gathered to celebrate 136 years of Girmityas in Fiji at Nasinu Sangam Primary School last Saturday evening.

“It is important to celebrate Girmit Day so that our future generations have an idea of the difficulties our ancestors went through,” Nasinu pundit Vinod Sharma said.

He said the youths should understand the meaning of “Girmit Divas” because through westernisation they were forgetting about their ancestors’ hard work.

“We live in multicultural country where many people don’t understand our language and culture; they can be part of this to know and understand what difficulties our ancestors had faced,” he said.

Bhim Deo, a sales rep at Vinod Patel and Company Ltd, who was at the celebration said: “The celebration is about looking back at our ancestors who came 136 years ago and to  acknowledge what they have done for us.’’

Meanwhile, University of the South Pacific student Navneet Kumar, 19, was also part of the celebration.

“It is very important for our youths to be part of this celebration and to remember what our elders had done for us in the past,” he said.

Mr Navneet said being part of the Girmit Day celebrations brought him closer to his culture and religion.

The president of the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam Fiji, Sadasiwan Naicker, thanked the people las Saturday for attending the Girmit celebrations.

“I would like to thank Radio Fiji 2 and our sponsors for making this occasion successful and hope, if things go well next year, then it shall be a five-day celebration,” Mr Naicker said.

The first indentured labour ship that brought Indians to Fiji was the Leonidas in 1879.
