Rewa Rice Limited launched its unpolished brown rice product on Saturday night.

The Government commercial company has introduced the unpolished rice into the Fijian market as they are currently selling only product which is semi polished brown rice.

Company, Mill Manager Ashrit Pratap said it would have an introductory price of $1.70 per kg and it would be available in 2 kg packets only.

“The main focus behind the product diversification was to introduce a unique product to the local market which has a lot of health benefits,” Mr Pratap said.

“This product is locally grown and milled therefore we would like the people to go for the Fijian grown product.

“The product launch is basically an official release of this type of rice in Fiji.

“Our product does not have any chemicals used during the milling process and the grains are fully naturally grown.

“Currently we don’t have this kind of rice on our shelves and with the benefits of this type of rice we feel that people of Fiji will definitely go for healthy choice.

“It’s considered a whole grain since it hasn’t lost its ‘wholeness’ through the refinement process.

“Whole grains are proven to reduce the build up of arterial plaque and reduce the risk of heart disease and high cholesterol,” he said.

The company is targeting the older generation in the view of fighting against Non Communicable Diseases it would be a healthy option for everyone.

He said this year the company plans to achieve about 700 tonnes of paddy from the farmers.

“But during our strategic planning meeting with all the stakeholders we noticed the production level is not up to that par.”

Mr Pratap said the company plans to have a new mill for the farmers to cater for the down times while he noted that the company hardly facedown times.

The packaging of the product was done by Narsey’s Plastics Industries Limited in Suva.
