The Rhum-Ba and Denarau Yacht Club was officially opened at the Marina on Saturday evening by the President of Fiji Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

This yacht club was successful through the commitment of the owners Mike Dennis and Nigel Skeggs.

Ratu Epeli said: “I am very aware of how important this project is to him and his team to see the vision and hard work come to fruition is a great achievement.

“I see a world class facility; this will certainly assist in bringing more events to Fiji shores as well as provide a home to all our visiting yachties.

“The nautical theory and attention to detail compliment the fantastic arrival view of the marina with the sleeping giant in the background.

“Having a venue such as this will assist in the development of the yachting at the local level such as the ANZ Auckland to Denarau yacht race in May next year.”

The President personally hopes that this will enable Fiji to reintroduce the President’s Cup to the international yachting program.

“As a patron or yachtie in Fiji, it is my desire to see this sector grow for the benefit of all Fijians.

“This building is the result of hard work of the many parties and I thank you all for the invaluable contribution.

“Showcasing the high quality workmanship and the finish that is available in Fiji, this is a facility you should be proud of building.”

The President thanked the owners for their dream and their financial and personal commitment to Fiji’s tourism industry.

“I am very happy to see your emphasis on using predominantly Fijian grown and Fijian made products.

“As a venue for private events, the Rhum-Ba will bring in a fresh and exciting new look to the Fijian restaurant and bar-scene with a fit out and location on arrival in Denarau.”

The port Denarau Marina won the Marina Industries Association, ‘International Marina of the Year’ award for 2015/2016.

“It is timely to acknowledge this achievement as well as recognizing the significant strategic role that the marina has played in developing the yachting sector in Fiji.

“A sector that grew by 28% in 2014 to a total contribution of $40 million to the tourism earnings as this his venue will only add to this growth.

“In addition the development will create employment for 30 staff at the beginning but with this number expected to grow,” he said.

Invited guests present at the opening were catered to a night of cocktail and finger foods.
